Once…

It came out of the blue, just as the leaves were shedding their green coats
Just as my heart became whole, there was change in the air.
Jaded as the night was long, I couldn’t resist your magnetic pull
Sit and rationalize as I might, all logical thought was squandered by your words
My heart was on fire, even at a distance.
I could tell this was different.
Stubbornness took its hold, but your words sparked a flutter in my heart
Be brave: A new dawn was upon me.
I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I found myself driving miles that would become all too familiar.
That beautiful, brisk fall evening held the promise of possibility
A vibrant sunset escorting me down the highway towards you
Ignoring my heart was one thing, but there were signs, clear as day
“Put a ring on it,” the billboard read.
Ignore, deny, resist. It couldn’t be.
Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

The door flew open, cheeks blushed pink
Electricity rebounding with a magnetic intensity between us
In this moment, there was no turning back. I had stepped over the edge
He pulled out the colors of my soul, seeing them all like the colors on the trees
Souls collide seamlessly, like puzzle pieces finding their match
The chess game had begun, make my move wisely…
But, life is short; few experience this magic.

Chemicals react, as lips gently caress
All bets are off, this poker hand revealed
I didn’t just kiss him that night, I inhaled him.
We fell together onto the dark, cool, cotton sheets in that crisp autumn air
Unable to resist, two became one…completely consumed.
It was nothing either of us felt before, either could comprehend
Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

In a single evening, one person turned the world upside down.
Was it all imagined? Could it be real?
Apart, we will only be incomplete, it was the undeniable truth:
Finding strength in the presence of the other.
A connection so strong, so fulfilling.
It was nothing short of terrifying, in the best way.
Get out before you get burned.
Cut your losses, the consequences are too grave.

As the leaves fell, my heart shattered beyond repair, the branches bare.
Autumn never looked the same. Time stole him from my arms
The world turned majestic with snow, earlier than usual leaving his heart frigid
It had far surpassed love now, there was no slowing down
He became every ounce of all that I could ever need.
How does this happen after all of his time playing this game?
Running away was the only way to take back control, so he ran.
He stabbed me with harsh words, the scars on my skin.
Bruises of the heart have flesh memories.
In the arms of another, he gave her my dream.
Told me… Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

The spring rain has come, I’m drowning without him, gasping for air.
Our incandescent love squandering in his wake
He gives me so little. But, in those fleeting moments… I knew we had it all
My fire still burns for him, eternal.
He’s every memory haunting my dreams in a state of repose
How do I face him? I have fallen apart.
6 weeks pass, wondering if will I ever see him again.
My soul waits for him in purgatory.
Will he float me to heaven or damn me to hell?
A day with him, worth a life sentence in hell.
Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

I’m running away, but I’m running in place. His silence is my night terror
Suddenly, the world stills. It’s real. I’m wide awake
The flowers bud and new hope blossoms.
Hope restored as his words wash through me.
I lost this battle, I have to win this war
Look closely because the devil’s in the details.
She took her hold on him, but he was mine first
Wish upon a star. Please, keep the diamonds in the sky
I would explore the deepest pits of hell to get him back
I can’t go on without him
Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

We come together, it was like no time had passed.
He said our love is incredible. In starching contrast to hers
I hold on, like an anchor latched to the bottom of the sandy ocean floor
Terrified to let him go, holding on for dear life
He courses through my bloodstream, flowing through me.
My appetite for him insatiable
In his arms, I am utterly and undeniably alive
Irrevocably in love with every piece of his being
His touch paramount, his gaze brilliantly addictive
Eyes that look into my depth, exploring my secrets.

Summer brought words that vowed friendship.
It beats silence, but it cuts me to the core
Every fiber of my being still loves him
So, I pull on my mask, keep my cards to myself
The game is on and I play to win, put my heart on the line
Nothing in life that has any worth, comes without a risk
After all this time, my heart is still his.
He won’t say that I mean nothing, he can’t give me that
That only leaves hope, there is no other choice.
I see his every shadow I know he feel this too
But, he won’t admit the true flow of his heart
Not yet. Not the right time. Not at all.

We will chase this passion to the ends of the earth
In search of something that will never be found again
Once in a lifetime doesn’t come twice
Can you find better than what we shared?
Because in the end, you won’t find this.
Lightning never strikes the same way twice in a lifetime.
Not now. Not this time. Not ever.
